Royal Portrush Golf Club
Royal Portrush Golf Club was formed in 1888 and in terms of tradition, it is hard not to be impressed with the famous Co Antrim links. The fact is that most of the world's great players, men and women, have savoured the delights of this superb terrain for more than 100 years. The championship, Dunluce Course and neighbouring Valley Course overlooking the North Atlantic, were designed by the eminent English architect, Harry Colt, in 1947. Colt costed the work at £7,000 though he would prefer to spend £10,000. In the event, the club insisted it should cost no more than £3,200.
In Joe Carr's view, Portrush tested every aspect of a golfer's make-up, including the ability to accept unkind bounces. And Christy O'Connor described it as Ireland's finest second-shot links course.
